You can be understanding and still have boundaries!!
There is a difference between extending grace and allowing repeated mistreatment.
We can recognize that someone is experiencing challenges while still expecting respectful communication.
We can forgive someone without immediately restoring the same level of access to our lives.
We can care about someone and still decide that a particular relationship, friendship, or professional environment is no longer healthy for us.
Boundaries are not necessarily about shutting people out.
They are about establishing what is acceptable, protecting emotional well-being, and maintaining healthy relationships.
Sometimes, boundaries sound like:
“I am willing to have this conversation when we can communicate respectfully.”
“I understand your perspective, but I do not agree with how this was handled.”
“I need time to consider what is best for me.”
“I can support you without neglecting my own needs.”
Setting boundaries may feel uncomfortable, particularly for individuals who are accustomed to helping others, keeping the peace, or putting
everyone else’s needs first.
But boundaries are not selfish.
They are an important part of self-respect.
